Homemade Fruit Leather

I have been slowly purging through the house - going through everything I own to decide what I want to sell, keep and throw out and I came across a big pile of magazines. I flipped through a few, until one caught my eye. Best Apple Recipes.  A-HA!

I'm super excited. I found a recipe which will be a huge hit at our house. Apple Leather.

Let's just say that we buy the fruit-to-go leather snacks on a regular basis. My oldest son LOVES them. But those little things add up when you buy them all the time. How great would it be to make it yourself!? Not only could I make as much or as little as needed, but I could also make flavours we like and know exactly what I'm feeding them (and how much sugar it has!)

Here's the recipe from Today's Parent - November 2006.

  1. Preheat the oven to 200ºF (93ºC). Place the oven rack in the middle position.
  2. Line an 11"x17" rimmed cookie sheet with tin foil. Spray thoroughly with non-stick vegetable spray.
  3. Spread approx 3 cups of applesauce in an even layer on the foil, making sure there are no spots that are thin or thick - as this will cause it to cook unevenly.
  4. Place in the over to dry for 6 to 10 hours. The surface of the apple leather should be shiny and just a little bit sticky - but definately not wet or soft. The edges will be a bit drier than the middle, but shouldn't be crisp.
  5. Remove from the oven and let cool to room temperature.
  6. When the leather is cool, peel the entire sheet of it off the foil in one piece. Cut crosswise into 1 inch strips. Roll and wrap in waxed paper.

Some ideas:

  • Put this in the oven before you go to bed for it to be ready in the morning.
  • Mix some berries into the sauce to make it different.

What I'm planning to do.

Well, now that I've found this recipe, I'm going to try something. I'm going to try it with our homemade applesauce, but I'm tempted to try it with some of the fruit flavoured baby food sauces. How good could they taste?! Apple/Blueberry. Strawberry. Peaches. yummy. Gonna test it and see what happens. Even if I just mix them in with the applesauce. I'll let you know. :)
